Tourism has been identified as one of the most relevant industries to make important contributions to sustainable development. To achieve sustainable development objectives, tourism needs to develop and implement voluntary initiatives. Compared with regulatory instruments, voluntary instruments promise to develop faster and be more effective to achieve environmental policy objectives at a lower cost. The publication of environmental information is also important. Related to these aspects we develop this paper, aimed to analyze the influence of the different voluntary instruments for sustainable tourism on the environmental information published by Spanish hotels. Our findings indicate that the variables that discriminate best the publication of this kind of information are the certification of the Environmental Management System (EMS) and the international presence. The rest of instruments analyzed show no influence in the publication of environmental information, related to low pressure from customers about environmental care.
